Zenelli QD System: Quick-Detach Connection for Telephoto Equipment

When carrying a camera with a large telephoto lens, the connection between the equipment and the carrying system becomes particularly important.

A Quick Detach system, commonly referred to as QD, provides a compact mechanical interface that allows a compatible strap to be attached and removed quickly from the equipment.

The Zenelli QD System is designed around this principle, providing a secure and reusable connection for photographers who frequently transition between carrying and shooting.

What Is a QD System?

A QD system consists of two complementary components: a QD socket and a compatible QD swivel.

The swivel is inserted into the socket and mechanically retained in position.

To remove it, the user deliberately operates the release mechanism and withdraws the swivel from the socket.

This provides a connection that can be engaged and disengaged without unscrewing conventional strap hardware each time the equipment is used.

Why Use QD with a Telephoto Lens?

Large telephoto and super-telephoto lenses are normally carried and supported from the lens rather than exclusively from the camera body.

Integrating a QD connection into the lens foot provides a direct attachment point for a compatible carrying strap.

The strap can therefore connect close to the structure supporting the lens rather than requiring an additional adapter between the lens and carrying system.

When the photographer reaches the shooting position, the QD swivel can be released and the lens can be transferred to the photographic support.

From Carrying to Shooting

Wildlife photographers frequently alternate between walking and photographing.

A carrying system needs to support the equipment during movement, while the tripod or gimbal becomes the primary support when the photographer begins shooting.

A QD interface helps simplify this transition.

The photographer can detach the strap from the QD socket without removing the lens foot or modifying the primary support interface.

This allows the same lens foot to participate in both carrying and shooting workflows.

QD and Arca-Swiss in the Same System

The QD connection and the Arca-Swiss interface perform different functions.

The QD interface provides the attachment point for a compatible carrying strap.

The Arca-Swiss compatible profile provides the connection to compatible tripod heads, gimbal clamps and other photographic supports.

When both functions are integrated into the lens foot, the photographer can move between carrying and tripod-supported use without attaching an additional plate beneath the lens.

This reduces the number of separate interfaces in the setup.

The Zenelli QD Strap Swivel

The Zenelli QD system includes a dedicated QD Strap Swivel designed to connect a carrying strap to a compatible QD socket.

Its purpose is straightforward: provide a compact mechanical connection that can be attached when the equipment needs to be carried and intentionally released when the strap is no longer required.

The Zenelli QD Strap Swivel uses 7075-T6 aluminum and stainless-steel components, combining low weight with materials selected for the mechanical functions of the assembly.

Quick Release Does Not Mean Accidental Release

The purpose of a QD mechanism is to make intentional attachment and removal fast.

That does not eliminate the need for correct operation.

Before carrying valuable camera equipment, the swivel should always be inserted completely and checked to confirm that it is properly engaged.

The user should also periodically inspect the swivel, socket and strap connection for contamination, wear or damage.

A quick-detach system is still a load-bearing mechanical connection and should be treated accordingly.

A Compact Alternative to Additional Adapters

Carrying systems can become increasingly complicated when multiple plates, strap adapters and connectors are stacked together.

Integrating the QD socket directly into a compatible lens foot reduces the need for additional hardware.

This is particularly useful when the same lens is regularly moved between a shoulder strap and a gimbal head.

The objective is not simply to make the connection faster, but to simplify the complete equipment configuration.

Designed and Manufactured in Italy

The Zenelli QD System is developed as part of the wider Zenelli camera support ecosystem.

Material selection, machining and mechanical integration are considered together so that the QD components can work with compatible Zenelli lens feet and photographic support equipment.

As with the rest of the system, the objective is to combine compact dimensions, mechanical functionality and straightforward field operation.

One Connection for a More Efficient Workflow

A QD system does not replace the tripod, gimbal or Arca-Swiss interface.

It solves a different problem: how to connect and disconnect a carrying strap efficiently while maintaining a dedicated mechanical attachment point on the equipment.

For photographers working with heavy telephoto lenses, that can simplify the transition between moving through the field and setting up for a photograph.

The Zenelli QD System provides a compact quick-detach connection between a compatible telephoto lens foot and carrying strap, complementing the Arca-Swiss support interface and creating a more direct transition between carrying and shooting.
